(I took these photos while making my way through Jhb by bus. Apologies for the quality).
Photo 4 – Snapshot 1
Note the following:
- This Cellular shop provides goods to Hawkers/Informal traders. Informal traders are seen as a benefit, not competition.
- Cellular phones are repaired here, suggesting that cellular phones are ‘recycled’ and not simply thrown away.
- The shop itself has solid metal doors suggesting how valuable cellular products are?
- There is an advert for the services of a “Prophet” on the right of the image.
Photo 4 – Snapshot 2
Note the following:
- More cellular products and repairs.
- The TV dish may suggest that their business includes digital tv products, or perhaps providing sport coverage during the 2010 world cup (the photo was taken a month after the 2010 Soccer World Cup).
- DIANE LADIES FASHION clothes are brought out on to the street to make full use of passing trade. Formal trading making full use of the benefits of informal trading.
- Large, lightweight, bags are sold to make it easier for migrant workers to carry goods home.
- Need a loan up to R60 000? Call Innocent for more details. See the light pole on the right of the image.
- You can hire the ‘bakkie”. A variety of services/products are provided by a single store.
Photo 4 – Snapshot 3
The photo was taken in August 2010. Second hand school books would be in demand at this time of the year to prepare students for their final exams.
